Gravity and astrophysics at UMiss

The LIGO group at UMiss has successfully secured NSF funding for the production of a sequel documentary to the recently released science documentary LIGO: A Passion for Understanding, directed by science filmmaker Kai Staats (Over the Sun Productions). Shooting of the new film, “LIGO:Generations” (working title), will begin June 1st at the LIGO Laboratory in Livingston, Louisiana.

Daniel Duddleston graduated with a BSc in physics from the Honors College by successfully defending his thesis “Detector Characterization Analysis of the Initial Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Obervatory using Principal Component Analysis”. Congratulations, Daniel!

Paolo Bertozzini gave a talk (”Quantum Mathematics for Quantum Physics”) at our weekly group meeting on 4/30/2014. The slides of his talk can be found here.

A good way to start the new year: the University of Mississippi is hosting a workshop on tests of general relativity in astrophysical environments. Many of the participants will stay in Oxford for collaborations in the next few weeks. More information is available on the workshop website.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Mississippi invites applications for a tenure-track position in physics at the rank of assistant professor for the Fall of 2014. The emphasis of this position is on developing an externally funded research program and laboratory capable of supporting and leading graduate students to a Ph.D. A competitive startup package is available in the first three years. The University currently has strong programs in atmospheric physics, biomedical ultrasonics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, high-energy physics, and physical acoustics. A Ph.D. in Physics or a related field and one year postdoctoral experience is required. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the teaching and service activities of the Department and the University. Teaching duties include three courses a year at the undergraduate and graduate level.
